Shape Shifters first devlog!


Hello everyone and welcome to the very first Shape Shifters devlog! This devlog will serve as a basic introduction to the basic concept of Shape Shifters and explain its game mechanics. So let's get started!

What is Shape Shifters?

Shape Shifters is a Dark Fantasy Action Sidescroller, with some light metroidvania mixed in there. It takes inspiration from games like MegaMan Zero and Hollow Knight. 

And yes, as you may have guessed by now Shape Shifters is about Shapes. 

Why? 

Well the simple answer is programmer art. 

This is also my first time ever tussling with game development at all. Making it about basic shapes cuts down on time id have to spend modelling and lets me tinker with the game engine more which was my main priority. 


However, I made sure it wasn't JUST programmer art and have made sure to incorporate the Shape idea into the world and lore. Which we will be going over on the next devlog!


Progression/Game Mechanics

In Shape Shifters you'll explore a deep cavern, do some platforming, and do battle with the mutant creaturs in it's depths. 

Combat consists of two combos. 

You'll have a light attack combo and a heavy attack combo which you can interweave at your pleasure! 

Each time you defeat an enemy they'll add to or heal your max health, you can switch between these two options on the fly and different enemies will add/heal different amounts.

You can then sacrifice your max health in save points in order to boost your damage and other stats!

Wanna play it risky and be a glass cannon with extremely high damage but almost no health? 

You can do that!


Wanna just have a giant health pool and be the slow tank? 

You can do that too!


There are also many different forms you'll be able to "Shift" into that will change how you play and open up new avenues of exploration!


Awesome! When can I play?

A development build  featuring the first full area of Shape Shifters will be available on November 1st for $0.00! So make sure to add it to your collection so you can be reminded when it releases!

As it is my first time dabbling in game development, I'd love to receive your feedback on the ideas presented here and the game itself when the development build is released. Everything here is subject to change! 

I hope to grow a nice community around this game where we can bounce ideas off of each other and help make a better game together.
